How much do dog walkers make per hour and per year

How much dog walkers make per hour in government wage data and on a job-title pay page, and what changes take-home pay for an independent walker.

Two pay figures answer "how much do dog walkers make," and they measure different jobs. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a 2025 median of $17.08 per hour, or $35,530 per year, for animal care and service workers. PayScale puts the average hourly pay for the job title Dog Walker at $20.33 in 2026, from 80 salary profiles.

The first figure is a wage midpoint for a wide occupation. The second is a self-reported average for people who used the title Dog Walker. Neither one is your take-home after driving between houses. That gap is the rest of this page.

What the wage pages actually count

Animal care and service workers, in the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, attend to or train animals in kennels, zoos, stables, shelters, pet stores, clinics, and aquariums. The median annual wage for animal caretakers, the larger slice of that group, was $35,360 in May 2025. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $27,250, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $50,060. Employment of animal care and service workers is projected to grow 11 percent from 2025 to 2035, with about 69,400 openings a year.

O*NET lists animal caretakers at $17.00 an hour and $35,360 a year for 2025. The task list includes dogs among animals that are fed, groomed, and exercised. Dog walker is absent from the sample job titles on that page. Those titles include groomer, kennel attendant, and zookeeper. Read the BLS and O*NET figures as the pay of people who care for animals on a wage, not as a quote for a solo walking route.

PayScale is closer to the job title people search. Its page, updated June 1, 2026, shows $10.65 at the 10th percentile and $48.90 at the 90th, around the $20.33 average. Eighty profiles is a small set. A city with long drives and high rents can sit outside that spread.

Time To Pet writes that professional dog walkers and pet sitters often earn between $15 and $25 per hour. That line is a software company's article, not a government survey. It is useful because it talks about people who set their own visit prices, which the BLS occupation page does not isolate.

What owners pay per walk, by length, is on dog walking prices. How to turn your costs into a price per walk is on dog walking rates.

What decides an independent walker's pay

An employed walker is paid for a shift. An independent walker is paid per visit, then spends unpaid minutes in the car unless the price includes them. The same visit price can be a strong hour or a weak one depending on how many houses you can reach in a short gap.

Location, walk length, solo versus group, and how full the week is move the year more than the job title does. A slow Tuesday with two visits and an hour of driving each way will not look like the PayScale average. Price the visit so the hour you want is left after miles, supplies, card fees, and a tax set-aside. That method is the rates guide. The market check for the price you publish is the prices guide.

An independent week (illustrative numbers)

The mileage rate is the one sourced input in this arithmetic: 72.5 cents a mile, the January-June 2026 IRS business rate named on the rates guide. Every other dollar and minute in the example is invented so the arithmetic is visible. It is not a survey, and it is not a promise.

Say a walker bills 20 visits in a week at $25 each. Gross is $500. Each visit is 30 minutes on site and 12 minutes of driving, and each trip is 4 miles. Supplies are $1 a visit. A card fee takes 3 percent of the gross. A tax set-aside takes 15 percent of what is left after miles, supplies, and the fee.

Miles are 80, times $0.725, or $58. Supplies are $20. The card fee is $15. Costs before the set-aside are $93, so $407 remains. Fifteen percent of that is $61.05, and the walker keeps $345.95. Time out of the house is 14 hours: 10 hours with dogs and 4 hours driving. Take-home per hour of that time is about $24.71.

That invented hour sits near PayScale's $20.33 average and above the BLS $17.08 median. Every cost in the example scales with the visits, so at 8 visits the hourly return stays about $24.71 and weekly income falls. The hour holds only while there is no fixed cost and no unpaid hour outside that per-visit time. A living is this kind of week, repeated, with the thin weeks included. Track the real miles and the real fees or the $24.71 figure is a story.

Getting paid

Three ordinary paths pay a walker. An employer pays a wage for a shift. A client pays you for a visit you scheduled. A booking app pays you per completed walk, after the app's fee. The wage paths are what the BLS median describes. The client path is what the illustrative week describes. Starting the client path, from the first conversation to a price you can say out loud, is on how to start a dog walking business.

The Dog Walking Rate Calculator works out what to charge per walk so you take home the hourly pay you want after driving, supplies, card fees and a tax set-aside. It holds a month plan for visits per week, fixed costs, and what you keep per hour. Suggested prices come from your own numbers.

The Income, Expense & Mileage Tracker tracks money in, money out and business miles for a dog-walking business and shows profit by month for tax time. It includes income, expenses in 12 plain categories, and a mileage log. Profit and the tax set-aside are estimates, and they are not tax advice.

A median wage is a midpoint of other people's jobs. Your route, your empty hours, and your fees decide the year. The figures above are a map, not a quote for your city.
