Dog walking business names: ideas and how to check one is free
Dog walking business name ideas grouped by style, plus how to check a state filing, a trademark, a domain, and a social handle before you print.

Pick a short dog walking business name a neighbor can spell, then check four places before you print it: your state business-name search, the USPTO trademark database, a domain at an accredited registrar, and the social handle. The groups below are name ideas written for this guide. They are not registered names, and this page did not check whether any of them is free.
A clever pun that fails one of those checks is a reprint, not a brand. Do the checks on two or three finalists, not on the whole list.

Say the finalist out loud, spell it to someone who is not looking at the page, and drop it if they hesitate. The how to start a dog walking business guide is the rest of the setup once the name is the one you will actually use.
Check the name before you print
Four checks, in this order. A clear result on one of them is not a clear result on the others. The U.S. Small Business Administration says each way of registering a name serves a different purpose, and that you are not normally required to use the same string for all of them.
State business-name search
The U.S. Small Business Administration says an entity name is how the state identifies the business, and that most states keep an already-registered entity name off a new registration. If you will trade under a name that is not your personal legal name, the same page says you might need a DBA, also called a trade name, fictitious name, or assumed name, filed with the state, county, or city.
Pet Sitters International puts the U.S. order this way: check the county clerk for local use, then the Secretary of State's office for a statewide registration, then the trademark office. Your state site is the one that counts. California is only an example of how a search box behaves.
California's Secretary of State says its business search is not case sensitive, and that you enter one or more known words from the entity name. California's Secretary of State says a keyword longer than 12 characters is cut off after 12. Search the distinctive word, then the full string, and try the name with and without a space. A miss on a sloppy search is not proof the name is open.
USPTO trademark search
A state filing does not stop a national trademark in the same kind of service. The U.S. Small Business Administration says to check prospective business, product, and service names against the official trademark database maintained by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
The USPTO says to do a clearance search before you apply, and to ask two questions of each mark you open: is it confusingly similar (look alike, sound alike, similar meaning, or a similar commercial impression), and are the goods or services related to yours? Related does not mean identical. Dog walking can sit next to pet sitting, daycare, and training in a stranger's mind.
On that search, uncheck the dead checkbox so you are looking at live marks, and search word marks in the combined mark field with the tag CM:. The USPTO says a database search cannot give you a clear-cut answer about whether a mark can be registered, and that filing fees are not refunded if the application fails. A private trademark attorney is the upgrade when the name is the one you will print on a van.
Domain
The U.S. Small Business Administration says that if you want an online presence, start by registering a domain name, also known as your website address, through a registrar service, and consult a directory of accredited registrars. ICANN says domain names under generic top-level domains may be registered with one of more than two thousand ICANN-accredited registrars.
The U.S. Small Business Administration says a domain can differ from the legal name, the trademark, and the DBA. Its example is Springfield Electronic Accessories using techbuddyspringfield.com. Renew the registration. A domain you forget to renew is a name you no longer hold.
Social handles
Instagram's own help page was unavailable for this guide, so the steps here are PostNext's description of the check, not a page from Meta. PostNext says that in the app you open your profile, tap Edit profile, and type the name into the Username field: a tick means it is free, a cross means it is taken, and nothing is saved until you press Done. In a browser, open instagram.com, then a slash, then the name: a profile means taken.
PostNext says a username is up to 30 characters and may contain letters, numbers, periods, and underscores, and that it is not case sensitive. PostNext also says to check the same name on X, TikTok, Threads, YouTube, and Bluesky, and to register it where it is free. A matching handle is easier for a client to find than a slightly wittier name on one app only.
Naming pitfalls
Anna Money warns that a name which locks you to one place, such as a southwest-only walk name, or to one service, such as puppies only, limits future growth unless that niche is permanent. A town name helps local search. It also tells the next town you do not walk there. Decide that on purpose.
Pet Sitters International describes a Florida pet sitter who received a cease-and-desist letter because the name was a federal trademark, after more than a year in business. Changing forms and telling clients was the expensive part. The check is cheaper at the start.
The U.S. Small Business Administration says registering a DBA, also called a trade name, fictitious name, or assumed name, gives no legal protection by itself, and that multiple businesses can use the same DBA in one state. A county filing is not a trademark.
Zarla's dog walking name list has no trademark search and no secretary of state step. Anna Money's naming guide has no USPTO search and no secretary of state step. Both are idea lists. The U.S. checks above are the part they leave to you.
PostNext says a free name can be taken at any moment, so treat a tick as current, not as a reservation. PostNext says that after a username change, the previous username is held for 14 days. Claim the handle the day you decide, and write down the date.
A name that promises every-weather walks still has to follow the heat, traffic, and leash habits in dog walking safety tips. Clients who hire the name will also ask whether that business is insured. That question is in dog walking business insurance.
Put the checked name where clients see it
The name is doing its job when it shows up the same way on a flyer, a price menu, and the social posts you actually publish. How you get the word out is in advertise dog walking.
The Find Clients Set includes a printable flyer that finds dog walking clients, a one-page menu of your walk and drop-in prices, and ready-written social media posts and stories a solo dog walker uses with their own name, prices and photos. It uses sample prices, times and areas as placeholders to replace with your own. The Find Clients Set is $10.99.
The limit of this check
A clear search is not a lawyer's clearance opinion. The USPTO says its own later examination can disagree with yours, and a conflicting live mark is a barrier to registration. Use the four checks to throw out obvious collisions before you print. Hire help before you spend real money on a name that is close to one you found.
